VERIFICATION-FIRST SPECIALIST MARKETPLACE

Built for a specialist-verification marketplace

A specialist marketplace was built around a fail-closed verification core. Credentials are uploaded, reviewed by a human, and only then earn a verified badge, while semantic matching and Stripe Connect handle discovery and paid consultations.

Challenges

The marketplace connected high-stakes specialists across engineering, medicine and IT. Generic profiles and keyword search could not establish trust, and unverified supply would have undermined the entire value proposition.

Unverified supply

Anyone could create a profile, so buyers had no reliable signal of real credentials.

Multi-jurisdiction licensing

Medical and engineering credentials differ by country and issuing body.

Weak discovery

Keyword search surfaced popular profiles rather than relevant expertise.

Constraints

Verification must fail closed — no badge without review.

Reviewers need an audit-logged approval workflow.

Unverified users cannot access sensitive collaboration zones.

Matching must handle semantic intent, not just keywords.

Payments must support escrow and cross-border payouts.

Architecture

Verification vault

A secure layer for professional identity and credential documents, with access restricted by role and every review decision logged.

Secure storage · RBAC

HITL review dashboard

Credentials route to an administrative queue where a reviewer approves or rejects them. Only approved profiles receive the verified badge.

Review queue · Audit log

Semantic matching

Problem briefs and specialist profiles are embedded as vectors, and the nearest verified matches are surfaced in a recommendation widget.

pgvector · Embeddings

Commerce engine

Consultation slots, escrow holds, platform commission and payouts are handled through Stripe Connect with dispute safeguards.

Stripe Connect · Escrow

Messaging

Verified users collaborate in real-time messaging with typing indicators, read receipts and persistent history.

WebSockets · Message store

Data
Flow

  1. 1

A specialist registers and uploads credentials.

  2. 2

Credentials enter the human review queue.

  3. 3

A reviewer approves or rejects the profile, and the decision is logged.

  4. 4

Approved profiles receive a verified badge and matching eligibility.

  5. 5

A problem brief is embedded and matched against verified profiles.

  6. 6

A consultation is booked, escrow is held and payout is released after completion.

Delivery

Core foundation

Database, API scaffolding, CI/CD and verified profile schema.

Verification

Credential upload, HITL dashboard and audit-logged approvals.

Matching

Vector embeddings and contextual specialist recommendations.

Commerce

Reservations, escrow, commission and cross-border payouts.

Hard
Problems

Verification across jurisdictions

Problem: Credentials from different countries and bodies do not share a format or validation source.

Resolution: Human review handles the long tail, while the system standardizes the evidence, decision and audit record around it.

Semantic matching quality

Problem: Keyword search rewarded popular profiles over relevant expertise.

Resolution: Profiles and briefs are embedded into a shared vector space, so matching is based on intent and domain rather than exact terms.

Escrow and payouts

Problem: Cross-border consultation payments add compliance and dispute complexity.

Resolution: Stripe Connect handles pre-authorization, escrow holds, commission and compliant payouts in one flow.

Results

Verified supply

Only human-reviewed profiles receive a verified badge and access to collaboration zones.

Better matches

Semantic matching surfaces the most relevant verified specialists for each brief.

Compliant payments

Escrow, commission and cross-border payouts are handled in one commerce flow.

Lessons

  • In trust marketplaces, verification is the product, not a feature.

  • Human review plus a clean audit record beats a purely automated badge.

  • Matching quality depends more on profile structure than on the embedding model.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Fail-closed means a profile is treated as unverified until credential review explicitly approves it. No badge, matching eligibility or access to sensitive zones is granted by default.

Credentials vary by jurisdiction and issuing body, and automated checks produce false rejections early on. Human review handles the long tail while the system standardizes evidence and audit records.

Specialist profiles and problem briefs are converted into vector embeddings and compared in a shared space. Matches are ranked by semantic relevance rather than keyword overlap.

Stripe Connect manages reservations, pre-authorization, escrow holds during the session, platform commission and compliant cross-border payouts.
